Nothing (the Florida company, not the phone maker) began by making paper straws. Brothers Brandon and Jordan Leeds noticed those straws were going into plastic cups with plastic lids, so they redesigned the cup.

How it works

The walls of the cup are taller than usual and fold down to close it. The hot cup uses three flaps that lock into a drinking spout. The cold cup has four folds with room for a straw.

Materials

A water-based coating bonds to the paper fibres instead of a plastic lining. It's certified plastic-free and home-compostable, breaking down within 180 days in a back-garden heap, and it can also be recycled.

For packaging designers

It's a neat reminder that the most sustainable part is often the part you remove. The folded lid also changes the printable area, which gives brands new space for graphics on top of the cup.
